Biography

Dr. Darlene Yee-Melichar is a Professor in PACE-Gerontology Program at San Francisco State University (SF State). She has been active as a faculty leader for both the SF State and CSU Academic Senates. She is the recipient of many awards and honors for her teaching excellence and service contributions to the campus, community and profession.

Teaching Interests

Dr. Yee-Melichar has taught at a variety of institutions of higher education including Barnard College, CUNY- New York City Technical College, St. Joseph's College, CUNY- York College, College of New Rochelle, Teachers College- Columbia University, Long Island University, University of Texas Medical Branch- Galveston, and San Francisco State University (SF State).   She was a laudable recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award from the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education.

At SF State, as an interdisciplinary instructor, she has taught in five departments/schools with academic attention on workforce development for an aging society.  Courses taught have drawn upon her expertise and teaching interests in aging and continuum of care; assisted living administration; educational gerontology; educational leadership; healthy aging; long-term care administration; minority issues in aging; nursing home administration; safety research and education for older adults; and older women’s health issues.  She enjoys working with students in both lecture/seminar courses as well as supervision courses that allow for high impact practices such as curricular innovations, internship experiences and research opportunities.  

Research Interests

Dr. Yee-Melichar’s research interests in healthy aging, long-term care administration, minority women’s health, and safety research and education are reflected in 6 books, 109 journal articles, book chapters, book reviews, technical reports, and numerous professional and scholarly presentations. She was active on the NIH Advisory Committee for Research on Women's Health, NIH Review Committee for Research Enhancement Awards Program, and AHRQ special emphasis panels on "Translating Research into Practice" and "Health Research Dissemination."  

Dr. Yee-Melichar chaired the U.S. DHHS-OWH Minority Women’s Health Panel of Experts; served on the U.S. DHHS-Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' Advisory Panel on Outreach and Education and the U.S. DHHS-OWH Region IX Women’s Health Advisory Council; and co-chaired the IAGG 2017 World Congress on Gerontology & Geriatrics Local Arrangements Committee, and the Region IX Health Equity Council (RHEC IX).  

Dr. Yee-Melichar is a Charter Fellow of the Academy for Gerontology in Higher Education, Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, Fellow of the AAHPERD Research Consortium, and Full Member of Sigma Xi, the national research society. Dr. Yee-Melichar has served on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Gerontological Social WorkJournal of Health Education and other peer-reviewed journals; and serves on the Board of Directors for the California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR), Cal MediConnect Advisory Committee of the San Mateo Health Commission, California Department of Aging- Aging & Disability Resource Connection Advisory Committee, and as an OMH Health Equity Mentor for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
