Biography
Janey Q. Wang is an associate professor of public administration. Her research focuses on local government fiscal policies, debt administration, and nonprofit finance. Janey holds a Ph.D. in Public Affairs from the Indiana University and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Renmin University of China. She has published in various public and nonprofit administration journals including Nonprofit & Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Municipal Finance Journal, Journal of Public Budgeting, Accounting, & Financial Management, Journal of Public Affairs Education, and Journal of the Transportation Research Board. She has worked on funded projects supported by the California Debt and Investment Advisory Commission, Kresge Foundation Advancing Knowledge Scholars Program, and the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy. Currently she is working on infrastructure finance project in China.
Teaching Interests
Dr. Wang has taught a variety of core curriculum and elective courses in the MPA program, including Resource Management, Financial Management, Policy Analysis, Research Method and Economics Perspective. She is passionate about developing new courses and bringing new perspectives to her students. In addition, she has served on four MPA degree thesis committees (one as chair) and delivered five independent study courses to MPA students.
Research Interests
Dr. Wang's research in the field of public finance can be categorized into three areas of inquiry: (1) Fiscal institutions and tax progressivity, (2) Debt management and California's debt in particular, and (3) Public finance in China. Most research in area of debt management in California has been developed after she joined the faculty at San Francisco State University. In particular, she has added a new area to her research portfolio: Nonprofit finance, which is consistent with her primary research interests in public finance.
