In the summer of 2022, one adventurous student embarked on a unique study abroad experience that led them to the charming city of Aarhus, Denmark. Priscilla Portillo, currently pursuing a Master of Public Administration, shared their incredible journey with us. The interview provided insights into the motivation behind the adventure, the enriching academic experiences, and the transformative impact it had on her career.

Priscilla began by explaining their desire to study abroad, a dream they had nurtured since her undergraduate years. Her curiosity and longing to explore new horizons led them to the Master of Public Administration program, which offered a unique opportunity to study overseas. "I looked at the SF State MPA program six years ago, and one of the components which interested me was the study abroad opportunity, and that got me excited because was my opportunity to finally study abroad.”, she reflected. Despite initial doubts caused by the pandemic, Priscilla decided to seize the moment and embark on this adventure.

One of the most fascinating aspects of her study abroad experience was the academic dimension. Priscilla had the privilege of taking a course in Denmark, and what made it even more special was that the course was taught by Dr. Sheldon Gen, a professor they had never encountered before as an instructor at SF State. This opportunity not only expanded their knowledge but also introduced them to a professor they would later have for their Capstone course, highlighting the serendipity of her academic journey.

The conversation then delved into Priscilla’s career path, revealing the remarkable impact the MPA program had on their professional life. The academic coursework directly correlated with their work at the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, where she held the position of Deputy Director of Vulnerable Victims and Community Engagement. "I think the MPA program as a whole has impacted the trajectory of my career, not necessarily just the study abroad portion, but because of the courses that I've taken." The skills acquired during the program led to several promotions, and Priscilla recognized the direct application of the concepts learned in the classroom to their day-to-day work.

Balancing work, academics, and personal life can be challenging, but Priscilla’s determination to study abroad paid off. She discussed the process of negotiating an unpaid leave with their employer to make the study abroad opportunity possible. She recommended, "You should always inquire to see what the possibilities are because, I didn't know if it was going to be possible, but I said, you know what? Let me talk to Human Resources and see what are the options." This decision led to an unforgettable journey that broadened her horizons in multiple ways.

The interview also touched on the cultural and social aspects of studying abroad. Priscilla described her experiences in Aarhus, and how they made friends and explored the city. "I think studying abroad or visiting any new place just sort of expands your thought process because you're experiencing a new culture, new foods, new routines”, she explained.  She highlighted the vibrant community that international students can become a part of and emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities to connect and experience the local culture.  "Aarhus has a lot to offer in terms of things to see. There is a booming downtown area, which is booming with many restaurants and unique shops.”

As the interview wrapped up, Priscilla shared valuable advice for those considering studying abroad. She emphasized the enriching experiences that Aarhus had to offer, from its downtown area and art museum to botanical gardens and hiking trails. They encouraged prospective students to make the most of their time abroad, explore, and make memories. Her journey to Aarhus was an inspiring adventure that not only expanded Priscilla’s academic horizons but also transformed her personal and professional life. Her story serves as a testament to the enriching opportunities that studying abroad can provide, as well as the transformative power of international education.
